I am A Teenager. An Introduction to Teenager’s Treatment

What is “Teenagers Phase” :

It is the period of time between childhood and adulthood where the development and growth occur on several physical and psychological levels. It usually begins from the age of 10 years and ends at the age of 21.

What changes occur at this age:

  • Psychological and social changes
  • Physical changes
  • Behavioral changes

Teenager’s problems:

  • Rush, recklessness, and doing dangerous things
  • Misinterpretation of social guidance
  • Getting involved in problems
  • Exposure to various types of accidents

How to treat teenagers:

  • Listening with attention:

Parents should talk to teenagers seriously with attention. They have to sit with them and understand everything they say by showing their interest and sympathy in their matters. They should also avoid blaming and judging them or even addressing solutions to their problems.

  • Direct Communication:

Teenagers react to their parents’ criticism wrathfully and negatively. Parents should be clear in the way they deal with teenagers. They should also choose the proper words which do not indicate any mockery or cynicism, interacting with the situation positively not negatively.

  • Respect the privacy of  teenagers:

This is done by avoiding tampering with their personal properties, avoiding monitoring them to detect any danger or threat that may surround them such as: trying to know where they spend their time without addressing the details of what happens during their absence.

  • Act discreetly:

Parents must keep calm while talking to teenagers, especially if they are shoeing angry feelings or tension. They should tell the teenagers that they are willing to talk to them whenever they calm down.

  • Think before rejection:

Often teenagers do a lot of strange behavior to attract the attention of those around them. These actions are sometimes shocking to the parents, which can call for the parents’ rejection to any request. In these cases, parents are advised to be careful and cautious before expressing their rejection of any of the teenagers’ behavior and not to exaggerate their rejection of all or the majority of their action. Instead of imposing the parents’ rejection, they should talk to the teenagers and try to understand the reason behind wanting to do something and they should also clarify the consequences of their behavior and choices.
